Sugar and Salt: A Sunburn (Poem)

Sugar and Salt: A sunburn (Poem)
In this instance red reminded me of a full stop - a sense of finality, a pivot.

The body laments sunburn, but sometimes is happy to suffer after feeling the salt of the water and the ease of the waves.

Consumed by something that felt a lot like poison. It was soon quenched only by a halt of reflection.

- At the same time huddled inside, trying to get out. But from what? Last year red made me run like the clappers in effervescent disarray. Bubbled up, discombobulated- a fierce flinch at the wounds the sea had created time and time again.

Pain manifested like droplets, not easily recognized, but nevertheless whispering in taunts, waiting in the stings of the ocean's waves.

Finally, the salty sunburn my body felt waved at the newfound realization that it too would always remain in motion, forever lost in the process.

It too was left dumbfounded by the endless battle of sugar and salt. The wrestling match that bellows between bitter glossiness found in a color like red.
